The Twin Cities Jazz Society announces its
2007-08 “Jazz from J to Z” concert series in this July issue of “Jazz
Notes.” With 15 concerts presented by 25 different jazz groups, the
upcoming season will be the biggest and best ever, fulfilling our
mission to increase listening opportunities for jazz fans, to increase
performance opportunities for local jazz musicians, and to promote
public awareness of jazz. We are also fulfilling our mission to
introduce young people to jazz with our four Jazz Educational Outreach
Joint Concerts at four area high schools (Bloomington Kennedy,
Minneapolis South, Eagan and Edina).
Last season’s
“Jazz from J to Z” series had a total audience of
nearly 3,000, who heard 23 different groups with about 240 musicians.
The new season will cover the most popular jazz styles as requested by
our members, including big bands, vocal jazz, mainstream/straight
ahead, contemporary/modern and traditional, plus, after a long absence,
Latin jazz. Public support of the Twin Cities Jazz Society,
particularly through concert attendance, is essential to the future of
jazz performance in the Twin Cities. For more details, including times,
addresses and ticket information, see the complete “Jazz from J to Z”
schedule here: www.tcjs.org/content/view/183/26/.
 The
2007-08 “Jazz from J to Z” season begins on Sept. 22 with the Jumpin’
Jehosafats traditional jazz band at St. Barnabas Center for the Arts in
Plymouth, kicking-off the new “Jazz at St. Barneys” series. Up next
will be our annual concert with the University of Minnesota Jazz
Ensemble I, directed by Dean Sorenson, at Ted Mann Concert Hall in
Minneapolis, on Oct. 18.
The mighty U.S. Army Jazz
Ambassadors, the premier jazz ensemble of the U.S. Army from Washington
DC, and one of the best big bands in the world, are coming to town for
two free “Jazz from J to Z” concerts. On Oct. 31 the Army Ensemble will
be at Ted Mann Concert Hall, with the opening by the University of
Minnesota Jazz Combo and on Nov. 1 at Bloomington Kennedy High School,
with the opening by the Bloomington Kennedy High School Jazz Ensemble.
This
year, TCJS is proud to present two big band CD release parties. The
first, by the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band, directed by Steve Wright, will be
Nov. 10 at Minneapolis South High School, with the opening by the South
High School Jazz Ensemble. The second, a concert and swing dance, by
the Wolverines Big Band with vocalist Judi Donaghy, directed by Jendeen
Forberg, will be held Nov. 23 at the Bloomington Knights of
Columbus Hall.
We’re having a “Big Band Christmas”
at St. Barnabas Center for the Arts in Plymouth on Dec. 1, with music
by the Good News Big Band and the Kevin Mills KC Gospel Orchestra.
One
of the highlights of this season’s series is the “J.J. &
Beyond–Celebrating the Jazz Trombonist” concert, featuring two of the
finest jazz trombonists in the country, Michael Nelson and Dave Graf,
swinging in the style of the legendary J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding.
The second set will feature the Local Damaging Winds trombone quartet
with special guest vocalist Connie Evingson. Backing up both groups
will be the Mary Louise Knutson Trio. The festivities take place at
Bloomington Center for the Arts on Jan. 6.
Another
tribute concert, “I Get A Kick Out of Cole—the Cole Porter Songbook,”
will feature vocalists Lee Engele, Rhonda Laurie, and Reeves Cary, plus
pianist Laura Caviani, on Jan. 25 at the Bloomington Knights
of Columbus Hall. On Feb. 7, the Kelly Rossum Quartet kicks off his new
series, “Jazz Thursdays” at the MacPhail Center for Music’s new
building.
The very successful show “Sax Summit”
returns to the Hopkins Center for the Arts on March 15. Laura Caviani
presents saxophonists Dave Karr, Kenni Holman, Percy Hughes and Kathy
Jensen plus the JAZZAX quartet, with Pete Whitman, Greg Keel, Mike Walk
and Dave Milne. On March 18, “Jazz from J to Z” will offer Latin jazz
with Seven Steps to Havana, directed by Doug Little, and the Eagan High
School Jazz Ensembles, at Eagan High School.
Up next
is another of our very popular jazz vocalist tributes, this one titled
“Beyond Category: the Ellington and Strayhorn Songbook,” featuring Maud
Hixson, Lucia Newell and Dennis Spears with the Rick Carlson Trio, on
April 12 at the Bloomington Center for the Arts. How about some music
from New Orleans, with the Southside Aces, six swinging young men, in
concert with the Edina High School Jazz Ensemble, on April 25 at Edina
High School.
The “Jazz from J to Z” concert series
concludes with “Swing Into Spring,” by the Century Jazz Ensemble, on
May 18 at Century College in White Bear Lake.
