Kevin Mahogany with the JazzMN Big Band   E-mail
by Jerry Swanberg

The JazzMN Big Band, directed by Doug Snapp, will perform their final concert of their 2007-08 series on Sat, March 22, at 7:30 PM at the Hopkins HS Performing Arts Center. For tickets call Ticketworks at 651-209-6689 or go to Ticketworks.com. The guest artists at this JazzMN concert will be vocalist Kevin Mahogany from Kansas City and pianist Jimmy Hamilton from the Twin Cities. During the first set Hamilton will be featured on three Big Band charts that he received from Gene Harris that were recorded by his Superband, including “Captain Bill”, a tribute to Basie and Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”. I’ve heard Kevin a number of times with some great BBs, including the Frank Mantooth JO from Chicago, the US Army Blues from Wash DC, and the UWEC JE, and Kevin is truly a standout jazz vocalist with a BB. To hear some of the above music, join me on Big Band Scene on Monday, March 10 – 10 PM and Sunday, March 16 – 7 PM on KBEM / Jazz 88 (88.5 FM). The musicians in the JazzMN BB, directed by Doug Snapp, are Brian Grivna, Pete Whitman, Dave Karr, Dale Mendenhall, and Adrian Barnett (saxes), Michael Nelson, Dave Graf, Ethan Freier, and Wade Clark (trombones), Steve Strand, Mark Bobnick, Scott Snyder, and Tim Sullivan (trumpets), Dave Singley (guitar), Mary Louise Knutson (piano), Terry Burns (bass), and David Schmalenberger (drums).
